Biological productivity enhancement over a continental shelf break (Bay of Biscay, NE Atlantic) evidenced by mesozooplankton aspartate transcarbamylase activity ArchiMer
Bergeron, Jean-pierre; Koueta, Noussithe.
During spring of 2005, satellite imagery revealed high sea surface chlorophyll a concentrations over the edge of a wide continental shelf in the Bay of Biscay (NE Atlantic). As a descriptor of biological productivity, mesozooplankton aspartate transcarbamylase specific activity was measured in situ during the bloom. Notably high values were detected in the bloom area relative to other parts of the study area.

Determining how the pelagic ecosystem over the continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay (NE Atlantic) functions: An approach using mesozooplankton enzyme activities as descriptors ArchiMer
Bergeron, Jean-pierre; Delmas, Daniel; Koueta, Noussithe.
A fisheries research cruise conducted in 2000 offered a first opportunity to take simultaneous measurements of the activities of three enzymes in mesozooplankton samples collected at a regional scale over the continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay in the NE Atlantic, with the aim of characterizing main aspects of the functioning of the biotic environment of small pelagic fish populations. The activity of the digestive endopeptidase trypsin was selected to characterize the assimilation rate of proteins, whereas pyruvate kinase (PK) was chosen as an indicator of carbohydrate assimilation and aspartate transcarbamylase (ATC) provided an overall assessment of mesozooplankton productivity. The Bay of Biscay region is subject to various strong physical driving...

Differential bioaccumulation behaviour of Ag and Cd during the early development of the cuttlefish Sepia officinalis ArchiMer
Lacoue Labarthe, T; Warnau, A; Oberhansli, F; Teyssie, J; Koueta, Noussithe; Bustamante, Paco.
Cuttlefish eggs were exposed to background concentrations of dissolved Ag and Cd, using the radiotracers Ag-110m and Cd-109. At different time of the embryonic development (50 days), some eggs were placed in non-contaminating conditions. During the experiment, the uptake and depuration kinetics, and distribution of these metals among the egg compartments (i.e. eggshell, vitellus, peri-vitelline fluid and embryo) were assessed. In parallel, experiments were conducted with sub-lethal concentrations of stable Ag and Cd (2 and 1 mu g l(-1), respectively) to compare the metal behaviour at higher concentrations. From the spawning date up to I month of development, both metals were taken up efficiently by the eggs, reaching load/concentration ratio (LCR) of 1059...

Do river discharge rates drive the overall functioning of the pelagic ecosystem over the continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay (NE Atlantic)? A comparison of two contrasting years with special reference to anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus L.) nutritional state ArchiMer
Bergeron, Jean-pierre; Delmas, Daniel; Koueta, Noussithe.
In the 2000 and 2001 springtime periods, mesozooplankton samples were systematically taken during research cruises devoted to the study of the distribution and abundance of small pelagic fishes in the French part of the Bay of Biscay, NE Atlantic, continental shelf. Simultaneous activities of three enzymes were measured in these mesozooplankton samples, to characterize the main features of ecosystem function at a regional scale. The aim was to assess assimilation rates of carbohydrates, through pyruvate kinase activity, and protein, through trypsin activity, by the mesozooplankton community and the resulting overall productivity, through aspartate transcarbamylase activity. The highest influence on the pelagic environment was the strong difference in the...

Hydro-plankton characteristics and their relationship with sardine and anchovy distributions on the French shelf of the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Petitgas, Pierre; Masse, Jacques; Bourriau, Paul; Beillois, Pierre; Bergeron, Jean-pierre; Delmas, Daniel; Herbland, Alain; Koueta, Noussithe; Froidefond, Jean-marie; Santos, Maria.
The spatial pattern in hydro-plankton and fish distributions and their relationship were analysed based on the spring 2000 fisheries acoustic survey. The importance of this survey was that it was a multi-disciplinary platform which collected an extensive set of parameters in the hydro-plankton leading to a potentially finer description of hydro-plankton conditions and fish habitats. More than 50 variables were measured on a grid of stations, in four compartments of the ecosystem: hydrology, nutrients, primary producers and meso-zooplankton. First, a joint analysis of all hydro-plankton compartments was performed using multiple factor analysis (MFA). The method was used to estimate a compromise factorial space common to all compartments in which the...

Interannual fluctuations in spring pelagic ecosystem productivity in the Bay of Biscay (northeast Atlantic) measured by mesozooplankton aspartate transcarbamylase activity and relationships with anchovy population dynamics ArchiMer
Bergeron, Jean-pierre; Koueta, Noussithe; Masse, Jacques.
The French part of the continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay (northeast Atlantic) is the habitat of an anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus L.) population of scientific interest because of its economic importance and the trend towards greater interannual fluctuations in its abundance, particularly as a consequence of variations in recruitment. Each year a 1-month survey of this population and its pelagic environment is undertaken. Among the descriptors of ecosystem function characterized, mesozooplankton aspartate transcarbamylase (ATC) activity is measured with the goal of defining overall productivity of the mesozooplankton communities. Diverse physical forcing factors are responsible for the enhancement of productivity in the Bay of Biscay, and their...

Variation of heavy metal concentrations (Ag, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Pb, V, and Zn) during the life cycle of the common cuttlefish Sepia officinalis ArchiMer
Miramand, Pierre; Bustamante, Paco; Bentley, Daniel; Koueta, Noussithe.
The developmental changes in the concentration of 8 essential and non-essential heavy metals (Ag, Cd, Cu, Co, Fe, Pb, V, Zn) in the tissues (digestive gland, cuttlebone and whole animal) of the common cuttlefish Sepia officinalis collected in the bay of the river Seine were monitored from the end of the embryogenesis until the adult reproductive stage. Compared to embryos, juveniles after hatching displayed much higher concentrations of Ag, Cu, Fe and Zn, suggesting an efficient incorporation from seawater. Conversely, the amounts of Cd, Pb and V in hatchlings remained constant suggesting that these metals are barely bioavailable for juveniles. Once the juveniles start to feed, the digestive gland appears to play a major role in the storage of all metals....
